Methodology for an Intellectual History, 11-17th Century
What happens when we take the subject of intellectual history to be both “learning” 學as a way of connecting the self to the world and the “scholars” 學者who give substance to “learning” through their own writings? This lecture proposes that learning from the Song to the Qing was constituted by five major fields, each with its own “special history.” In diverse ways the works of scholars showed how the individuals were embedded in the world around them. They thus provided different foundations for understanding human commonality and community. Three fields of learning will be the subject of these lectures: government, culture, and morality. In this first lecture characteristics, and changes, within these fields will be introduced through a comparative discussion of texts by Wang Anshi 王安石and Huang Zongxi 黃宗羲, Su Shi 蘇軾and Tang Xianzu 湯顯祖, and Zhu Xi 朱熹and Gu Xiancheng 顧憲成.

Statecraft Learning : No Place for Politics?
The activities of government 政事involve “politics” but government is not the same as “politics.” In these lectures “politics” refers to the contention between individuals and groups to define the values that should inform government. Statecraft learning was a particular approach to politics, one that gave priority to the activities of government. This lecture explores methods of organizing information about governing in statecraft learning, rather than investigating the philosophies of government of individual scholars. Does statecraft learning have its own special history? Do the questions that statecraft scholars answer change over time? What can the ways scholars organized information about the activities of government tell us? This lecture pairs scholars to explore this question: 司馬光 and 馬端臨, 真德秀 and 丘濬, 張居正 and 呂坤,陳仁錫 and 陳子龍.

Is it all Politics? Moral and Cultural Perspectives on Governing
It was possible to care greatly about politics without aspiring to devote one’s career to government service. Figures such the Cheng brothers, Zhu Xi and Lu Jiuyuan, Wang Yangming and Zhan Ruoshui, Gu Xiancheng and Liu Zongzhou cared about politics and served in government but their influence stemmed from their ideas about moral learning. Eminent monks such as Qisong 契嵩 and Dahui Zonggao大慧宗杲, and Zhuhong 袾宏 and Deqing 德清 were also concerned with politics. The same can be said of literati whose fame rested on their cultural and literary accomplishments although a few served as important officials as well. Examples include Su Shi 蘇軾 and Huang Tingjian 黃庭堅, Yang Wanli 楊萬里and Yan Yu嚴羽, Li Mengyang 李夢陽and Wang Shizhen 王世貞, and Yuan Hongdao 袁宏道and Feng Menglong 馮夢龍. This lecture asks how the political perspectives of moral learning and of cultural learning differed from each other, and how these two fields of learning, each in its own way, challenged the priorities statecraft scholars assumed to be key to ordering the world.

What has been Missed? What has been Lost? What has gone Wrong?
The workshop is an invitation to discuss three problems. First, how should we treat the two fields of learning in heaven-and-earth studies missing from the lectures: the physical world and the biological world? Second, what is ignored by the methodological approach I have adopted? Third, what have the lectures misread and misunderstand?
